One aspect of intellectual property development and protection underutilized by growing companies are the rights granted under federal copyright law. A federal copyright protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. For relatively nominal filing fees in comparison to other forms of intellectual property, a federal copyright may afford companies protection for assets vital to growth like advertisements, brochures, programming code or website content.
In addition to registering federal copyright for clients, Mr. Colodney counsels clients how to properly use, license and enforce rights pertaining to copyrighted material and how to implement copyrighted material as part of a well-planned portfolio of intellectual property.
Mr. Colodney has successfully represented clients in adversarial copyright infringement matters from both sides of the potential infringement—both as attorney for the infringed copyright owner and counsel for the alleged infringer.
Mr. Colodney maintains membership in the Intellectual Property sections of the American Bar Association, New Jersey Bar Association and Association of Corporate Counsel. |
